Yours or mine? Ownership and memory.

چکیده
An important function of the self is to identify external objects that are potentially personally relevant. We suggest that such objects may be identified through mere ownership. Extant research suggests that encoding information in a self-relevant context enhances memory (the so-called 'self-reference effect'), thus an experiment was designed to test the impact of ownership on memory performance. Participants either moved or observed the movement of picture cards into two baskets; one of which belonged to self and one which belonged to another participant. A subsequent recognition test revealed that there was a significant memory advantage for objects that were owned by self. Acting on items (i.e., moving them) had no impact on memory. Results are discussed with reference to the importance of self-object associations in cognition.

Suppose you and I are both editing a document. You make and change and I make a change, concurrently. Now if we want to still be seeing the same document then I need to apply your change after mine and you mine after yours. But we can’t just apply them willy-nilly. I must amend yours somehow and you mine. If my change is written ∆, yours δ, my amended change δ.∆ and yours ∆.δ, we get ∗∆ ∗ ∆.δ =...

متن کاملMine or yours? Development of sharing in toddlers in relation to ownership understanding.
To examine early developments in other-oriented resource sharing, fifty-one 18- and 24-month-old children were administered 6 tasks with toys or food that could be shared with an adult playmate who had none. On each task the playmate communicated her desire for the items in a series of progressively more explicit cues. Twenty-four-month-olds shared frequently and spontaneously. Eighteen-month-o...
متن کاملMine and Me: Exploring the Neural Basis of Object Ownership
Previous research has shown that encoding information in the context of self-evaluation leads to memory enhancement, supported by activation in ventromedial pFC. Recent evidence suggests that similar self-memory advantages can be obtained under nonevaluative encoding conditions, such as when object ownership is used to evoke self-reference. Using fMRI, the current study explored the neural corr...
